B’nai B’rith Housing New England’s “The Coolidge at Sudbury” Affordable Senior Housing Proposal Permit Approved by Sudbury Zoning Board of Appeals

SUDBURY, MA – At a public hearing on August 8th the Sudbury Zoning Board of Appeals approved a comprehensive permit for B’nai B’rith Housing New England’s “The Coolidge at Sudbury” affordable senior rental housing proposal. On August 30th, the period for appealing the permit ended without incident and the permit was certified.

The Coolidge at Sudbury, located at 189 Boston Post Road, will provide 64 units of affordable supported senior rental housing. The name for the development, the Coolidge at Sudbury, pays homage to the Coolidge family, who began the substantial greenhouse operation on the site in the late 1800s. The Coolidge will be a high quality rental community promoting active living that allows seniors in Lincoln-Sudbury to retain their independence while remaining in their communities.

The Zoning Board of Appeals held three public hearings, in June, July, and August, where B’nai B’rith Housing presented its proposal for the Board’s review, and residents were encouraged to provide public testimony. Included with the B’nai B’rith proposal were a letter of support signed by nearly 30 local residents and an interfaith letter of support signed by seven clergy leaders of local churches and synagogues.

“We’re very excited about reaching this milestone in our work to build affordable senior housing in Sudbury,” said B’nai B’rith Housing Executive Director Susan Gittelman. “The town of Sudbury has been a pleasure to work with and the Zoning Board’s suggestions have enhanced our proposal. We appreciate their keen interest in building high quality affordable housing for Sudbury residents.”

B’nai B’rith Housing worked with the Zoning Board members to adjust the original proposal to include a revised design that lowered the height of the roof and increased the setback along Boston Post Road while still maintaining the architectural feel of the community. Landscaping was also reviewed and supplemented to ensure that trees and shrubs would create an attractive view that buffers the parking lot.

“Sudbury needs to make it easier for our seniors to stay in the community,” said Sudbury resident Kathleen Bean. “At the hearings, I expressed my support for B’nai B’rith Housing’s proposal because it addresses Sudbury’s critical need for affordable senior housing.”

A number of Sudbury residents, including two abutters, spoke at the hearings to provide support for the proposal and the goals of B’nai B’rith Housing to bring additional affordable housing to expensive housing areas like Sudbury.

“As a long time resident of Sudbury who has struggled to stay here because of an oil spill that made my home uninhabitable, this proposal will provide residents like myself rental options we didn’t have before,” said Lydia Hughes. “Like many residents, I didn’t want to leave Sudbury. I’m excited that B’nai B’rith chose Sudbury to work in.”
